Former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni insists Gianluca Scamacca is not yet guaranteed a place in Luciano Spalletti’s Euro 2024 but admits it will be ‘difficult to leave him at home if he continues like this.’
Scamacca has been the most prolific Italian player in the last two months, but Spalletti did not call him up for international friendlies against Venezuela and Ecuador in March, probably for disciplinary reasons.
Ex-Italy coach Donadoni, who reached the Euro 2008 quarter-finals and was eliminated on penalties by Spain, feels Scamacca must still fight to earn a place in the Azzurri squad for the upcoming continental competition.
Donadoni insists Scamacca not guaranteed a place in Italy’s Euro 2024 squad
“He must earn it on the pitch, but if he continues like this, it will be difficult to leave him at home,” the former Milan winger told Gazzetta.
“I think he’s really improved in physical shape and determination. He didn’t seem convinced enough, but now goals are boosting his confidence, and it’s all down to his hard daily work on the pitch.”
Donadoni is a product of Atalanta‘s academy and made over 120 appearances for La Dea as a footballer, before joining Milan in 1986.
Atalanta will host Olympique Marseille in the second leg of the Europa League semifinals on Thursday and Donadoni warned Gian Piero Gasperini’s side about the French side.
“It won’t be an easy game because Marseille won’t have the pressure from playing at home, so Atalanta must be cautious,” he said.
Atalanta are in the race for a Champions League spot in Serie A and have qualified for the Coppa Italia Final.
Donadoni praises Gasperini and Atalanta’s American owners
“Having a deep squad to help Gasperini rotate the team has been fundamental. It’s another coach’s merit because he’s managed to keep the whole team focused and make everyone feel involved.”
Donadoni also believes that Atalanta’s American owners are taking the appropriate steps to develop the team.
“It’s a model and patience is needed,” he argued.
“An American group has a majority stake, but the Percassi family continues to leave its mark. Usually, foreign owners tend not to give continuity. On the other hand, the USA-Italy, like in Bergamo, works perfectly.”
Scammaca should be first choice striker at the Euros no questions asked. He’s in fantastic form and has all the qualities of the missing striker that Italy were searching for. Forza!
